Production: rebound after a July dip#
ELSTAT's Industrial Production Index (base 2021 = 100) rose 5.8% year-on-year in August 2026. In July it had fallen 1.2%, which MacroPolis noted was the first negative reading since August 2025. The August rise came mainly from electricity supply (+13.2%) and manufacturing (+4.0%). Mining and quarrying rose 1.5%, and water supply fell 2.5%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the index rose 2.0% from July.
Within manufacturing, motor vehicles recorded the largest annual increase. Clothing recorded the largest fall (−18.4%). Sub-sector swings can be large when the base is small, so they should not be read as a guide to the whole sector.
For January–August 2026, the average index was 3.1% above the same period of 2025. Manufacturing was up 2.7% and electricity 6.2%. Mining and quarrying fell 8.3% and water supply fell 2.1%.
Trade: nominal export growth larger than volume growth#
Bank of Greece balance-of-payments data for January–July 2026 show goods exports up 16.1% at current prices and 4.9% at constant prices. Exports excluding fuel rose 8.1% at current prices and 3.3% at constant prices. The gap between current-price and constant-price growth means much of the nominal increase reflects higher prices rather than higher volumes. This fits with the higher inflation readings covered in our macro snapshot.
Industrial investment: where announcements appear#
Company and government announcements about new plants and expansions are best tracked at the source:
- Athens stock exchange regulatory announcements and annual financial reports for listed industrial groups.
- Enterprise Greece, the national investment and trade promotion agency: enterprisegreece.gov.gr.
- Ministry of Development investment portal, for incentive calls and lists of approved projects: ependyseis.mindev.gov.gr.
- Energy-intensive industry. Large industrial users are among the drivers of electricity demand cited by the grid operator. See our energy signals note.
Incentive schemes such as the Development Law (Law 4887/2022) involve tax-exemption and grant rules. They are covered in the Development Law note.
Caveats#
- IPI figures are revised as late survey returns arrive.
- Electricity supply can drive the headline index, so check manufacturing separately.
- One month's reading tells you little about a trend. Compare year-to-date averages as well.
